St. Joseph's College Jakhama announces its first patent for an eco-friendly superabsorbent hydrogel developed by faculty.

DIMAPUR — St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama, announced the publication of its first patent by the Intellectual Property Office, Government of India.
According to an update from the college, the patent, titled "Citric Acid Crosslinked Gelatin–Poly Acrylic Acid-Co-Sodium Acrylate Superabsorbent Hydrogel", has been developed by Dr. Duangailung Kamei, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry.
It stated that the invention presents an environmentally friendly, highly absorbent material capable of absorbing and retaining large amounts of water.
It has potential applications in agriculture, hygiene products, and environmental management.

Notably, it said, the material remains effective even in saline conditions and can absorb water exceeding ten times its own weight under controlled conditions.
The college stated that the achievement marks a significant step in strengthening its research and innovation ecosystem and sets a foundation for future academic advancements.
