DIMAPUR — An awareness programme on the theme ‘Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection: The journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047’ was held on November 7 at the indoor stadium of St. Joseph's College (A), Jakhama.

The programme was organised by the college’s Department of Commerce, in collaboration with the Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LMCP), a DIPR report stated.

The programme aimed at educating students on consumer rights, legal metrology, and the importance of informed consumerism for a progressive India.

Joint Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection, Bendanglila attended the event as the special guest.

In her speech, the joint secretary highlighted that legal metrology plays an essential yet often unnoticed role in ensuring fairness in everyday transactions — from weighing vegetables in markets to buying fuel at petrol pumps.

Bendanglila stated that legal metrology enforcement system works silently to maintain accuracy in weights and measures and to protect both consumers and traders from unfair practices.

Illustrating common instances of cheating in measurements, she emphasised that inaccuracies in packaged goods or fuel are not merely unfair but unlawful.

Bendanglila urged students to be vigilant consumers by checking weights, MRPs, and expiry dates, and to report any violations to the concerned authorities.

She also encouraged them to spread awareness within their communities, noting that “small acts of awareness lead to big waves of change.”

Calling students the future torchbearers of honesty and fairness in society, she urged them to uphold the principle that “every measure counts, and every citizen matters.”

She further reminded attendees that a silent but critical system ensures consumers receive their rightful value, and encouraged everyone to support the mission of fairness, stating, “Fairness starts with accurate measurement.”

Limatoshi Jamir, Joint Controller of LMCP, stated that Vikshik Bharat 2047 represents the government's vision to transform India into a developed nation by 2047, as part of his keynote address.

Jamir called upon all the consumers to work hand in hand for developed India and urged the participants to spread awareness on how to exercise consumer rights.

Abraham, Addl. Public Prosecutor, Nagaland Lokayukta, highlighted the key features of the Consumer Protection Act 2019 and emphasised the importance of exercising consumer rights, including the right to safety, right to be informed, right to choose, right to be heard, right to seek redressal, and right to consumer education, as a resource person.

The programme was chaired by Kepozo Kapuh, former college ambassador. Dr. Sr. Thresiamma VG, Vice-Principal (Academic Affairs), invoked God's blessings, and Moatemsu, head of the Department of Commerce, extended greetings.

Mughahito Tuccu of the Department of Commerce, delivered the vote of thanks, and Rev. Fr. Vipral John, PG coordinator, pronounced the benediction.
