St Joseph University, Nagaland, held its first LIT Fest 2026, bringing students and faculty together for literary, cultural and creative competitions.
DIMAPUR — The Department of English, St. Joseph University, Nagaland, in collaboration with the university’s Literary Club and Drama Club, organised the first edition of LIT Fest 2026 on September 1 and the 2nd at the university auditorium on the theme “Words that echo through eternity.”
The two-day literary festival brought together students and faculty members for a celebration of literature, language, creativity, culture and artistic expression, the university stated in a press release.
The fest commenced with an inaugural ceremony and ribbon-cutting led by Head of the Department of English, Dr. Thokchom Sunanda Devi.
The ceremony also featured a drama titled “Chaos behind a successful programme” presented by the Drama Club, highlighting the importance of unity, cooperation and collective effort in overcoming challenges.
Addressing the participants, Dr. Devi encouraged students to take part in the various competitions with confidence and emphasised that competitions should not be viewed solely in terms of winning.
She noted that failure provides an opportunity to identify weaknesses and improve. She also described the participants as “history makers” for being part of the inaugural edition of the literary fest.
The first day featured a range of competitions, including singing, monologue, BGMI, MLBB, ludo, poetry painting, dance, extempore speech and bread eating.
Students participated in both on-stage and off-stage events, creating an atmosphere of excitement and healthy competition.
The second day began with a debate competition on the topic, “The right to protest and reservation: Are they instruments of justice and equality?”
Participants engaged in an intense exchange of views, demonstrating critical thinking while addressing contemporary social issues, the release stated.
Another major attraction was the Mr. and Miss LIT competition, which featured introduction, informal and formal rounds.
Sixteen contestants participated, with traditional attire showcased during the introduction round. The contestants demonstrated confidence, individuality and stage presence, while the questioning segment of the formal round tested their articulation, presence of mind and clarity of thought.
The festival concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, where trophies and certificates were presented to winners of the various competitions.
H Hanthu Yimchunger was crowned Mr. LIT 2026, with Nguruh V Wilfred securing the first runner-up position. In the women’s category, Jacinda Odyuo was crowned Miss LIT 2026, while Neingunuo Kire was adjudged the first runner-up.
The organisers stated that LIT Fest 2026 provided students with opportunities to develop confidence, critical thinking and communication skills, while encouraging artistic expression and healthy participation. The participation of students from across departments reflected the inclusive and collaborative spirit of the event.
