Netflix's most-viewed show of all time, Squid Game, is returning for a second season, the streaming platform announced on Sunday.

Squid Game is a South Korean survival drama series created by Hwang Dong-hyuk that became a viral sensation following its debut on Netflix last September. The show's popularity saw it garner more than 1.2 billion hours in its first 28 days. The series managed to scoop up Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards this year and is also expected to feature heavily at the Emmy's next month.

Needless to say, fans of the series had been clamouring for a second season and Netflix may have just answered their wishes.

On its official Twitter page on Sunday, Netflix wrote, "Red light... GREENLIGHT! Squid Game is officially coming back for Season 2!" alongside a clip which featured a brief animation of the iconic gigantic animatronic doll seen in the 'Squid Game' pilot.

Last October, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said that he was not sure if a second season was possible. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, however, confirmed in January that new episodes of the series was coming.

In a surprising turn of events, Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote a message to his fans confirming the return of a second season of Squid Game. He wrote, "It took 12 years to bring the first season of 'Squid Game' to life last year. But it took 12 days for 'Squid Game' to become the most popular Netflix series ever. As the writer, director and producer of 'Squid Game,' a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show."

In his letter, Hwang confirmed that protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and the masked antagonist the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) will both return.
