‘Son of Nagaland’, a documentary on Dr. Talimeren Ao’s life and football career, was released in Kohima.
DIMAPUR — A documentary tracing the life, footballing career and legacy of Dr. Talimeren Ao, titled “Son of Nagaland", was released by Minister for Tourism and Higher Education Temjen Imna Along at CIMORB Hotel, Old Minister’s Hill, Kohima, on Thursday.
Presented by the Mokokchung District Football Association (MDFA) and directed by Kilangtemsu Imsong, the documentary was released as part of the commemorative activities for the 25th Dr. T Ao Trophy (Inter-District Football Championship 2026).
According to a press release, the programme brought together representatives of the Nagaland Football Association (NFA), members of the Dr. Talimeren Ao’s family, MDFA officials and the organising committee to honour the legacy of Dr. Talimeren Ao.
Through archival material, personal accounts and historical context, the documentary seeks to preserve an important chapter of the region’s sporting heritage for contemporary and future audiences.
Along, in his address, spoke about the importance of taking “Son of Nagaland” to wider platforms so that Dr. Talimeren Ao’s life and achievements could reach a broader audience. He also spoke about the value of preserving and sharing the story of the footballer with younger generations and beyond the state.
He further announced that a Dr. T Ao lecture and discourse series would be launched by the Department of Higher Education on his birth anniversary, January 28, next year, at Fazl Ali College.
The series will be held as an annual event in collaboration with the NFA and MDFA, with the aim of incorporating Dr. Talimeren Ao’s life and footballing career into educational and research discourse.
Along said such initiatives would enable students to know and learn more about his exemplary life and sporting career.
The minister also said that, in commemoration of the silver jubilee edition of the football championship, photographs and reports of Dr. Talimeren Ao would be featured in Hornbill Magazine 2026 in his memory.
Earlier, the proceedings began with opening remarks and an introduction to the documentary by Advisor for Transport and Technical Education Temjenmenba, who is also convener of the organising committee for the 25th edition of the Dr. T Ao Trophy.
As part of the programme, official brooches were also presented to Temjen Imna Along and the granddaughter of Dr. T Ao.
Speaking on the occasion, NFA Joint Secretary Chenonlo Woch spoke about the continuing influence of Dr. Talimeren Ao’s career and legacy on the younger generation.
He recalled how Dr. T Ao left football at the height of his career and returned to Nagaland, highlighting his commitment and love for his people. He also referred to the historical account of an offer from Arsenal Football Club, noting that his decision to return to Nagaland reflected his desire to serve his people and contribute to society.
Representing Dr. Talimeren Ao’s family, his granddaughter Ningdangnaro Tally expressed gratitude to the Government of Nagaland, Department of Youth Resources & Sports, NFA and the organising committee for their efforts in bringing the documentary to fruition.
She said the documentary would help keep the spirit and legacy of her grandfather alive for present and future generations.
The Inter-District Football Championship is scheduled to be held from October 13 to the 31st at Renpo Lu Sports Complex, Ungma, Mokokchung.
Dr. Talimeren Ao holds a distinctive place in the history of Indian football. As captain of India’s football team at the 1948 London Olympics, he became part of a defining moment in the country’s early sporting history following Independence.
