Dimapur, May 25 (EMN): There is a need for ‘genuine and value-based social workers who are committed, sincere and hard working’ to wipe out injustice and corruption from the face of the society,’ students of social work have been told. They are required to intervene in the areas that require solution “to resolve people’s problems with their learning,” the head of a local college in Dimapur said recently.
Addressing a gathering of graduating students of social work, the principal of Unity College in Dimapur, Dr. Sanjay Kumar Chhabra, said that the people need ‘more and more social entrepreneurs to transform the society.’
The speaker was addressing a ‘farewell programme’ for the second batch of 43 social work students of the North East Institute of Social Science and Research (NEISSR) in Dimapur.
As the chief guest of the function, the principal appreciated the initiative of the Catholic church in establishing the social work institute and ‘through which many social work professionals have been groomed to bring development and empowerment in the troubled region,’ a press release from the NEISSR offering updates stated this week.
The press release stated that Dr. Chhabra had stressed on ‘genuineness and value based social work professionals who need to be committed, sincere and hard working to wipe out all forms of injustices and corruptions from the face of the society.’ Lamenting prevalent ‘social problems,’ the press release stated, he exhorted the outgoing social work students to intervene in the areas that require solution “to resolve people’s problems with their learning.”
Further, Dr. Chhabra appreciated the students for “choosing the right course” and expressed confidence that “you are going to bring a positive change in the lives of people and transformation in our communities.”
The principal of the NEISSR, Fr. Dr. CP Anto addressed the students during the event as well. He said that the society needs more ‘social doctors’ to “heal the wounds of society and find out the root causes of the various problems and the reasons” in the society.
The NEISSR has trained 43 “social doctors” who are skilled and empowered to help individuals, groups and communities, he said. He said that around 60% percent of the youth have been placed for the job before their final examinations and “trying to give job placement to all very shortly.”
