Dimapur, March 21 (EMN): Celebrating the theme, ‘Promoting community and environmental sustainability’, North East Institute of Social Science & Research, (NEISSR) commemorated International Social Workers’ Day on March 21, at the institute Conference Hall.
The event is being celebrated in all parts of the globe with social workers marking the achievements of the profession and promoting social justice by taking messages to their governments, employers, communities and partner organisations.
Explaining the concept of social work as a helping profession, Rev. Dr. C.P. Anto, principal asked the social work trainees to develop “the skills of teaching a man to fish which will help him to feed for his life”. “To help somebody, we need to develop our intellect, our skills and our attitude so as to reorient ourselves towards helping every individuals that we come across to experience the same transformation’, he said.
Fr. Anto also gave a brief narration on the growth of social work profession from a charity based approach towards a right based approach. Highlighting the theme of the day, he opined that social work trainees should think beyond their own community or tribal affinity and move towards a broader horizon where they can help and empower individuals irrespective of their tribes, colour, status, and belief etc.
He stated that diversity should not be considered as a liability but as strength and resource and added that social workers can become the real agent of change.
Short play on the concept of social work as ‘teaching a man to fish, rather than giving fish’ which epitomized the value of social work profession was presented by the students of Youth Development and Peace & Conflict Transformation Studies specializations.
Other highlight of the programme included a play on the importance of environmental conservation by students of Community Development and a song by the students of 2nd semester MSW.
