Dimapur, November 16: The North East Institute of Social Science and Research (NEISSR) organised for a number of its students a ten-day ‘study tour’ to Guwahati in Assam from November 1 to the 10th.
The students were from the second year Master of Social Work batch, a press release from the institution stated in a press release that was issued to the media on Wednesday.
“The major objective of the exposure visit was to make the students familiar with the different approaches and strategies adopted by the civil society bodies for well being of the underprivileged population,” the organisers informed.
During the tour, the visiting students were ‘exposed’ to “different settings of developmental works carried out by regional, national and international organisations.”
The trainees visited 18 regional, national and international organisations. The places they visited included the North East Network, the Foundation for Social Transformation, Caritas India, North East Diocese of Social Service Society Forum, the Don Bosco Institute, Snehalaya; the National Institute of Rural Development; the Save Our Soul Village, the Fransalian Agency for Social Care and Education in India; World Vision Guwahati; the North Eastern Social Service Centre; the Legal Cell for Human Rights, the Centre for Environmental Education, the Bethany Social Service Centre, the Bachpan Bachao Andolan and the Central Jail at Guwahati.
‘The visit was a life-changing experience for the social work trainees as they were exposed to the reality of how such social issues are tackled by such organisations, and challenges encountered in their everyday work. The visited organisations were dedicated for uplifting the poor and marginalised communities,’ the press release stated.
The trainees are said to have ‘witnessed’ various kinds of services such as supportive education, legal assistance and protection, healthcare, shelter for the homeless children, vocational courses for youth, and awareness programmes, etc. provided by nongovernmental organisations.
“The trainees also learnt how an organisation at the regional, national and international level functions and the role of a professional social worker in such organisations,” NEISSR added.
