DIMAPUR — A one-day farm machinery distribution programme under the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation (SMAM), Component-8, for 2026–27 was held at the District Agriculture Office, Shamator, on Friday.
Speaking as the special guest, EAC Shamator, Mekato, said the farm machinery distributed under the scheme should be seen not merely as government assistance but as an opportunity to transform agriculture into a sustainable enterprise, according to a DIPR report.
He urged the beneficiaries to use the machinery responsibly, improve productivity, and adopt innovative farming practices.
Highlighting the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, Mekato said farmers should become active participants in nation-building rather than passive beneficiaries of government schemes.
He also encouraged crop diversification, stating that mechanisation could make farming more attractive to the younger generation and help curb rural youth migration.
The EAC added that while the government continues to invest in the agricultural sector through various schemes and infrastructure, lasting development depends on the collective efforts of both the government and the farming community.

He urged the beneficiaries to make effective use of the support provided and achieve successful outcomes that would encourage greater investment in the district.
The programme also featured speeches on behalf of the beneficiaries before the distribution of agricultural machinery to the selected farmers.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by District Agriculture Officer L. Kivika Chophi. Programme Officer Tsulun AI presented a brief note on SMAM, while SDAO Shamator Alex Meyese delivered the vote of thanks.
