The church organizations should work hard to prevent the changing theme and meaning of Christmas. For the majority of the people Christmas time today means merry making, organizing picnics, late night partying, marketing, feasting, drinking, excessive decorations etc. etc. These activities are indeed punishing the have-nots. The trend was first seen in cities and then in towns. Lately, this practice has spread to the rural areas.
Today, Christmas would mean tension for the have-nots. The moneyed people have the hard time of making choice of the best of dishes and the nature of parties and places but the have-nots scratch their heads while making effort to buy a kilogram of meat for the Christmas lunch. It has also become a matter of worry for these have-nots when comes to Christmas marketing. Many people are compelled to engage in extortion, looting and stealing during this time of the year.If this is the way the Christmas should be celebrated we are insulting our own faith. We are insulting our Saviour. We are the repulsive force rather than the soul winner. We are displaying the wrong message to the world. It is the most anticipated calendar day for the Christians. Christmas symbolises forgiveness, humbleness, meekness, love, happiness and health, hard work and toil, peace and brotherhood, abundance and hope. Sadly, young and old, kings and paupers, strong and weak are not united in the spirit of Christ’s teachings. Today, the Christmas celebration appears like a local reincarnate of the hippie-days bohemian musical fete Woodstock or election campaign. Cut to these days, Christmas has been laced with festoons and fanfare with wild parties.
The Church should study the situation on urgency and redress it before the very meaning of Christmas celebration is completely deviated. The church should do away the notion of ‘Christmas expenditure’ instilled in the mind of the people. This very way is eroding the Christmas spirit.
