DIMAPUR — Kohima district administration has banned any individual, organisation, or association within its jurisdiction from shooting stray dogs.
An order issued by the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, Rhosietho Nguori, noted that certain organisations and associations have issued ‘shoot-at-sight’ orders for stray dogs in the district.
He reminded all concerned that such actions violate the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the Bharatiya Naya Sanhita, which prohibits the killing of animals, including stray dogs.
Acts of this nature are deemed illegal under the law, he warned, adding that strict action would be taken against those found violating the ban.
According to the order, the presence of any stray dogs should be reported to the office of the municipal/town council authorities in the urban areas or to the respective village authorities/area administrative officers in rural areas.
The authorities, with the help of the chief veterinary officer, should take care of such stray dogs as per the laid-down procedures of relevant laws, it added.
