Shillong Polytechnic, a premier Government Technical Institute of the State, on Friday kick-started its Golden Jubilee celebration through a grand function held at the Institute with the august presence of the Deputy Chief Minister, in charge Education, Prof. R C Laloo as the Chief Guest and Principal Secretary Education, P K Srivastava as the Guest of Honour.Congratulating the institute on this milestone achievement, Prof. Laloo said that maintaining the standard and qualitative education which is demanded of a technical institute needs energetic and qualified faculty. He said that the vision of the predecessors to start this institution is to produce technicians at the supervisory level to meet the requirement of technical manpower in various fields of development like roads, buildings, energy generation, communication and others and so it is the duty and responsibility of the present generation to elevate that vision to greater heights.
Expressing satisfaction that this institute has endeavoured to instill on its students the love for excellence, he urged upon the teachers to be updated with the ever changing world of science and technology so that the students are at par with the rest of the country. He also encouraged the students to devote their time and energy in studies and so that they can overcome the challenges of achieving excellence.
PK Srivastava, in his speech said that 50 years of successful existence signifies what the institute has achieved while adding that everyone, right from government functionaries to the local representative have worked hard in partnership to ensure the growth of the institute.
Stressing on the six principles which contribute to the growth of the institution, i.e., discipline, diligence, intelligence, innovation, creativity and passion, Srivastava called upon the faculty members and students to ensure that positive changes and improvements take place in the institute.
It may be mentioned here that Shillong Polytechnic was established in October 1965 under the composite State of Assam with only one branch of study, Civil Engineering. Initially the institute started from the Tribal Research Institute Building at Mawlai, near Gaushala. Fifty years since, the Shillong Polytechnic offers courses in Civil Engineering with the annual intake of 60 students, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering with intake of 30 students each and Computer Science & Engineering, under the World Bank Assisted Project, with intake of 30 students.
Now, the institute is housed in a magnificent building with well equipped infrastructure, with 1 branch to 5 branches of Engineering courses and 30 to 180 students annually besides 15 to 60 faculty members. Important facilities are also available in the institute, including hostels for boys and girls, teachers, teacher-trainers, laboratories, library and others.
Also present at the function were local MLA and alumni, Embhahlang Syiemlieh, Commissioner & Secretary, Education, D P Wahlang, MDC of Umsning and alumni, Donkupar Sumer, Chairperson, MPSC, L R Sangma, Director, Higher & Technical Education, C P Gotmare, officials from the Government Departments and members of Dorbar Shnong.
