Kohima Police have solved the mysterious murder case of 22-year-old Vihozhonu Zao, whose lifeless body was discovered near her home last month. This development brings a sense of solace to those grieving and seeking justice, as the accused -- adopted paternal uncle of the victim-- was arrested more than 10 days after the incident. This gruesome murder, which cut short the life of a young woman, has incited outrage across the state and sparked waves of shock, fear, and insecurity. Thousands of people took to the streets of Kohima demanding the concerned authorities book the culprit/s and vowed not to remain silent until justice is delivered. Candlelight vigils were held in various locations, including Dimapur and Wokha, to pay tribute to the young basketball player. Many more took to social media to express their anger, safety concerns, and calls for justice. The sense of unease was palpable, and rightly so when people are not safe anywhere. The victim was said to be brutally killed in her own home, and that too by someone close to her. Given the sensitivity and complexity of the case, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to probe the case has done a commendable job by arresting the accused. The prolonged secrecy surrounding the case before the police finally solved it is likely to fuel conspiracy theories and suspicions. As the investigation unfolds, more unsettling details may emerge. The police should leave no stone unturned to uncover what has transpired and ensure a timely delivery of justice.

It is a matter of grave concern that the state is experiencing a disturbing increase in criminal acts. Earlier this year, a woman was reportedly murdered by her own husband in Thilixu village. This was followed by similar incidents near Pimla village in Chümoukedima and in Walford, Dimapur. Last month, a triple murder at Hakhizhe village in Niuland and the murder of Vihozhonu Zao in Kohima shook public conscience. This concerning pattern of crime serves as a chilling reminder of the surge in heinous offences within the state. To deter such horrendous incidents, the law enforcement agencies should intensify patrolling and surveillance and ensure speedy trial and conviction. Perpetrators of crime should be given exemplary punishment to serve as a deterrent. The public must also remain vigilant and collaborate closely with the police by reporting suspicious activities and not interfering in the investigation process. Most crimes, especially those against women, are committed by individuals known to the victims. Therefore, community efforts and support are crucial in solving and reducing crime. Silence is tantamount to encouraging criminals to continue their activities.
