DIPHU — Nikonjo Kathar, former C-n-C of disbanded United People’s Liberation Army (UPLA), wrote a letter to Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 18 to set up a high-level inquiry to look into the murder of Robin Brahma, the former caretaker of Nirmal Tea Estate and to evict the encroachers settled in Nirmal Tea Estate at Lahorijan, in Karbi Anglong district.

In a press statement, Kathar said the murder of Robin Brahma some 15 to 20 years ago still remains a mystery. The people behind the murder were still not arrested, he said, adding that there is a dispute over ownership of the tea estate. ‘There is suspicion of a deep conspiracy behind the murder,’ he added.

Kathar in his statement alleged that the Nirmal Tea Estate and its adjoining areas were “quite infamous” for illegal activities by people from Nagaland and migrants illegally occupying the land.

“From people’s statement, it is given that the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) authority has approved the setting up of an army base camp and training centre at Lahorijan Nirmal Kumar Tea Estate adjacent to Nagaland. This act is expected to deter border encroachment along the Nagaland border. However the proposed act of setting up a defence base and training centre has not come up yet,” Kathar said.
