Session on women-centric laws held for Wokha police personnel

DIMAPUR — The Wokha district administration, Department of Social Welfare, and District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) under Mission Shakti, in collaboration with the Wokha District Legal Services Authority (WDLSA), organised a capacity-building session for police personnel of DEF Wokha at the Superintendent of Police’s conference hall, on Monday.

The session focused on key women-centric legislations including the Domestic Violence Act, the Protection of Women from Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act, and the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act (ITPA), a DIPR report stated.

District Mission Coordinator (Mission Shakti), Dr. Wonchano E Enny, delivered the introductory remarks, highlighting the objectives and ongoing activities of Mission Shakti.

She also briefed the attendees on various welfare schemes available for women, emphasising the importance of awareness among law enforcement personnel.

Additional Superintendent of Police Biren Lotha delivered a short speech, expressing appreciation to the resource persons for conducting the session.

He acknowledged the relevance of such programmes, especially for police personnel who often face high workloads and may encounter related issues within their own families.

Case worker (Legal), Sakhi One-Stop Centre, Thungbeni Kikon, spoke on the POSH Act, stressing the importance of creating safe and respectful workplaces for all employees.

Advocate WDLSA, Shanchobeni P Khuvung, provided an insightful explanation of the Domestic Violence Act and the ITPA, helping participants understand the legal framework and its implications.

Central Administrator, Sakhi One-Stop Centre, Renthunglo Kikon also addressed the gathering. She elaborated on the services provided by the centre and its role in supporting women in distress.

The programme was chaired by Merithung Lotha, Gender Specialist, DHEW.

A total of 52 police personnel attended the session, which aimed to strengthen legal awareness and promote gender-sensitive approaches within law enforcement agencies.
