Dimapur, June 8 (EMN): The sensitisation week on ‘Plastic waste management’ organised by the Wokha district administration concluded on June 7 at the town hall in Bhandari.
Speaking on the dangers of plastic waste, Extra Assistance Commissioner Temsuchuba Jamir said that human have generated excessive plastic waste for many years without systematic management to control its negative effect on health, environment and ecology.
Pointing out that the problem caused by the plastic waste for healthy survival is not only for mankind but for animals on the land and even the marine life in the oceans, he called for collective effort in minimising the threat caused by unreasonable generation of plastic waste.
A documentary on the threats, destruction and impending dangers of plastic waste presented by EAC Riku khutso, pointed out that “Since plastic do not degrade easily, dumping of waste must be stopped by replacing it with alternative products which are healthy and eco- friendly.”
Khutso appealed the leaders of NGOs, civil societies, entrepreneurs and student leaders to continue to spread awareness and sensitise the public at all levels to use papers, jute or cloth bags for healthier environment.
He also encouraged them to take up local carry-bag manufacturing projects to promote self reliance and economic wellbeing of the people.
President of the Lotha Hoho Bhandari, Lisumo Jami appealed to the district administration to help in finding suitable alternative way before implementing total ban on plastic bags as Bhandari and its adjoining areas do not have any manufacturing facilities to respond with alternatives.
