ICAR-AICRP, Nagaland University holds training on avocado cultivation for farmers at Seithekema-A in Chümoukedima.
DIMAPUR — The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)-All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Fruits, Department of Horticulture, School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, organised a day-long farmers’ training programme on "Planting, care and maintenance of avocado" under the Tribal Sub-Plan at Seithekema-A village in Chümoukedima district on September 8.
According to an update, Dr. Alemla Imchen delivered a comprehensive session on avocado cultivation, focusing on scientific planting, care, and maintenance practices.
She introduced the farmers to avocado as a promising fruit crop and highlighted the scope and potential of its cultivation in Nagaland.
The session covered key aspects of orchard establishment and management, including site selection and drainage, spacing and orchard layout, mulching, intercropping, orchard sanitation, and other essential practices for maintaining a healthy and productive orchard. The technical concepts were supplemented with photographic illustrations and videos to facilitate practical understanding.

Dr. Bendangsenla conducted an interactive session on pest and disease management, during which farmers shared problems encountered in their orchards. The session focused on identifying common field-level issues and discussing appropriate management practices.
A total of 20 progressive farmers interested in growing avocado attended the programme. At the conclusion of the training, avocado saplings were distributed to participating farmers to encourage field-level adoption.
The village council chairman shared reflections on behalf of the trainees and expressed interest in adopting avocado cultivation in the village, noting that it fulfilled a long-standing desire that had been constrained by high investment costs.
