DIMAPUR — The Business Association of Nagas (BAN), in collaboration with the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur and Commissioner of Police, organised a symposium on surveillance implementation in Dimapur on the theme ‘Securing Dimapur: A joint endeavour’ at Rhododendron Hall, Police Complex, Chümoukedima, on July 19.

In his address, Director General of Police, Rupin Sharma, said that security is the collective effort of all the concerned citizens and urged all the NGOs, civil societies and BAN to come forward for successful implementation of the new pilot project, a DIPR report stated.

The police chief briefed about the project, highlighting the new Automatic Number Plate Reading Cameras with AI technology that enables instant vehicle identification. He appealed to citizens, especially for Dimapur city, to install CCTV cameras to aid law enforcement.

Sharma disclosed that Dimapur requires at least 10,000 CCTV cameras, which is unaffordable for the government. He urged concerned citizens and associations to contribute. He informed that the police department has already approached some departments for the project.

Additionally, the DGP stressed the importance of integration of the surveillance system into one umbrella.

The BAN president, in his welcome address, said safety is crucial for development and emphasised that the symposium aims to create a smarter, safer city through strategic surveillance system implementation.

The DIG CID presented a live demo of the pilot project, explaining that the new surveillance system will help integrate with the transport department to instantly detect vehicle details, including registration, owner contact, and driving license information.

Panel presentations were also delivered by Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, Dr. Tinojongshi Chang; Deputy Commissioner of Chümoukedima, Polan John; Commissioner of Police, Kevithuto Sophie; Urban Development & Municipal Affairs; Bar Association and BAN.

Representatives from the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) and East Dimapur Business Association also shared insights from the business community.

The meeting adopted a City Surveillance Implementation Project for Dimapur, covering high-priority zones such as commercial districts, traffic intersections, municipal service corridors, public transport hubs, government installations, and vulnerable urban pockets.

The project will be implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, leveraging private sector capital, technology, and operational expertise under strong public sector governance, regulation, and oversight.

Further, the meeting also adopted a resolution to establish a Multi-Stakeholder Task Force, consisting of representatives from various departments including Home, Police, Urban Development and Power, deputy commissioner's office, municipal body, trade bodies and civil society.

The task force has a 15-day deadline to implement the city surveillance project.
