The State Election Commissioner (SEC) on Saturday directed all the deputy commissioners to designate a returning officer and an assistant returning officer in view of the upcoming general elections to three municipal councils and 36 town councils in the state.

The SEC has asked the DCs to furnish the names of the officers for each of the municipal and town councils in the district to the State Election Commission for approval.

It may be mentioned that the outgoing Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio, had said in February that the state government would announce election to the urban local bodies (ULBs) in March and implement 33% reservation for women, pointing out that the Centre would not provide “grant” to the state if the ULB elections are not conducted.
