‘More than 80% of the students of the state opt for Arts as the stream”, casual estimates say but the lack of a corresponding increase in enrollment in the science stream is proving to be counterproductive in parallel. Owing to the uneven placement of subject and career, a recent seminar for parents in Kohima asserted, creation of job opportunities for students of the Arts stream and its graduates will be an uphill task.
This assertion was one of the main points of reference a local seminar that was organized exclusively for parents, on May 19 in Kohima town. Local career resource group, Career CliniQ, collaborated with the directorate of employment and craftsmen training to organize the daylong seminar. The seminar was for parents of a local school, Dainty Buds School, in Kohima town, on Tuesday.
“It may be mentioned here that this is a series of seminars that has been (conducted) across the schools of the state in order to encourage parents and students to take up science stream after their matriculation, the organizers of the event informed in the press release.
The organizers claimed that ‘more than 80% of the students of the state opt for Arts as the stream’. “However without corresponding increase in science enrolments, job creation for the arts graduates may be an uphill task. At present both the center and the state has got thousands of vacancies for science graduates which are remaining unfulfilled because of lack of adequate competent candidates,” Career CliniQ stated.
Resource person Dr. Anirban Choudhury addressed the audience on the various job opportunities that were available in the science stream. He told the parents that various government schemes and scholarships have been introduced to promote science as a career subject for students.
“The parents and teachers both benefitted from the informative session. Use of the modern technology including the digital courseware, namely Smart TutoR was also encouraged. The parents were very happy for such an event being organized,” the organizers explained. “Their presence in large numbers and their rapt attention was testimony of the same”.
The principal of Dainty Buds School, Thejano Meru, expressed her gratitude to the parents who turned up in large numbers for the event. She assured the parents to conduct more academic evcents such as seminars in the future focusing on similar career-oriented sessions for the students.
Later, parents were invited to actively participate with their wards in the making decisions for their careers.
