Dimapur, Aug. 31 (EMN): Wokha district legal services authority (WDLSA) has opened legal literacy clubs (LLCs) in three schools under Wokha district.
The schools in which the legal literacy clubs were set up included Regimental School DEF, Wokha; Government Higher Secondary School; and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Chukitong. WDLSA set up the clubs on August 30 and 31.
Speaking at the launching of legal literacy club at Regimental School, DEF Wokha, on August 30, Superintendent of police, Wokha, Manoj Kumar, stated that man was born free but was bound by chain. He encouraged the students and teaching faculties to avail the opportunities of legal services and get themselves equipped with the basic knowledge of law and disseminate the basic rights of law to the masses. He stated that ignorance of law cannot be an excuse to commit crime.
Kumar also assured the WDLSA of every possible assistance and cooperation from the Wokha DEF.
Also speaking on the occasion, additional deputy commissioner, Wokha, K Mhathung Tsanglao stated that LLC would be beneficial not only for the club members and students but also the public in general. Tsanglao inaugurated the LLC at GHSS Chukitong and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Chukitong on August 31.
Exhorting the students, he urged upon them to protect and improve the environment against global warming. He stated that protecting government properties is also an important fundamental duties for all the citizens.
Judicial magistrate first class cum WDLSA secretary, Seyielenuo Mezhü, in her keynote address, asserted that ignorance of law and lack of legal awareness creates many problems in the society. She therefore said as a responsible citizen one must be equipped with the basic laws of the country. Towards this end, she stated that legal literacy clubs were established in the district.
The objectives of setting up legal literacy clubs was to train the members by the legal services in various legal aspects to create awareness on concern such as human trafficking, labour laws, Pocso Act, child rights, anti ragging to name a few. Secondly, the clubs were set up to identify the people in need of legal awareness and legal aid, and thirdly to establish a link for the people in need of legal assistance to the district legal services authority.
WDLSA also facilitated the three schools with a computer set for the services of the LLC and further assured basic facilities like computer tables, book shelves and chairs within a couple of weeks.
