Dimapur, June 23
The Indian International Model United Nations for 2015 for Nagaland was conducted in Livingstone Foundation Higher Secondary School of Dimapur on June 20 and the 21. Students from 16 schools from across the state as well as various other north eastern states participated in the mock parliamentary event.
Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an educational simulation or academic competition in which students learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations.
The inaugural function of the International Model United Nations was conducted in the auditorium of the local school on June 20 with Yitachu Pfitu, Minister for School Education attending as the chief guest. Chairman of the school Andrew Ahoto was the host for the event. The student delegates participated in debate sessions across the two-day event under three committees of the International Model United Nations. The committees are the Security Council, Human Rights Commission, and Lok Sabha. During the event, the delegates deliberated on current political and social issues concerning Human Rights, Juvenile Rights, and the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. To add a semblance of authenticity to the proceedings, the general mode of conducting the sessions was the representation of various countries and ministers and Members of Parliament (Lok Sabha) by the delegates. Each of them was issued specially-made placards which contained the names of countries or portfolios and names of ministers or members of parliament which the delegates represented, the organizers informed in the publicity handout.
According to the organizers, the participating students received ‘hands-on experience’ about the working of world bodies such as the Security Council and learned about the legislative proceedings as carried out in the Lok Sabha.
A special team of members had come from Sarla Birla in Guwahati to look after and preside over the proceedings of the committees, the organizers said. The team consisted of Indrajeet Hessa, Hrithik Modi, Vedant Patusary, and Mehul Pasari.
The organizers are elated that “It was also revealed by Mr. Aman Baldai that all the issues deliberated during the event would be given due importance and the consensus of the student delegates would be sent as a report to the UN Office at New York as well as to the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India”.
Some of the important highlights of the two-day event included a hand-print and signature board where all the dignitaries, delegates and teachers put their handprints and autographed; special tree plantation drive where important dignitaries including the chief guest planted saplings on the inaugural day; participation in the International Day of Yoga organized in the green lawns of Livingstone Foundation Higher Secondary School. More than 1, 200 students, teachers, NCC Cadets and various officials from the NCC and the government of Nagaland participated in the event, the organizers said.
The two-day event came to a close on June 21 with the closing ceremony that was held in the school auditorium. The chairman of the school gave away presentations, certificates, and awards to the best delegates from all the committees of the mock United Nations event. Besides, presentations were also given to vice president of IIMUN, Aman Baldia, director general of IIMUN-North East Region, Vedant Haran, and Indrajit Hessa and his team from Sarla Birla and the team of cameramen led by Deepak.
The closing function was brief and was marked by several musical performances by students and teachers. The Best Delegation Award went to Delhi Public School of Numaligarh in Assam for their exemplary performance.
