Dimapur, Jan. 30 (EMN): The annual sports meet of Salesian College of Higher Education (SCHE), Dimapur was held from Jan. 26 to Jan. 29th.
The marathon was held on the first day. On Jan. 27, a programme was held with Fr. Roy George, executive director of AIDA as the chief guest and Fr. M P Thomas, rector of the Bosco College of Teacher Education as the guest of honour, a press release informed.
Fr. Roy in his speech stressed on the importance of developing life-skills. “Sports play an important part in the life of a student, a school and an institution”, he said and cited the example of Edmund Hillary.
“In his earlier attempts to scale Everest, Hillary often failed. After his last failure, he took a piece of paper, drew the picture of Mount Everest and wrote, Mt. Everest, I will defeat you because you have stopped growing, but I am still growing”, he stated.
Fr. Roy also cited an example from the 2012 Olympics stating, “In one of the races, Ivan Fernandez of Spain was in second position. Just ahead of him was Kenya’s Abel Mutai who thought he won the race. But actually he had not crossed the finishing line. Ivan Fernandez noticed this and prompted Abel to cross the finishing line as he did not want to take advantage of Abel’s mistake”, he informed and stated that this is decency in sports.
During the concluding session on Jan. 29, Fr. Jaison, rector of Good Shepherd Seminary gave away the prizes to the winners. He congratulated the organisers and participants for conducting the annual sports successfully despite all odds.
In his concluding speech, Fr. Paul Panü thanked God for the beautiful days during the sports. He congratulated the participants and encouraged them to learn to be God-fearing people and good citizens as Don Bosco, a great lover of youth and sports, always exhorted, it said.
