Nagaland government bans new structures along National Highways and orders demolition of illegal encroachments following Supreme Court directives immediately
DIMAPUR — Nagaland government has prohibited the construction or operation of any new dhaba, eatery or commercial structure within the Right of Way (RoW) of all National Highways with immediate effect, and directed district administrations to remove all unauthorised structures already standing within the RoW.
According to a DIPR update, the directive was prompted by the Supreme Court's orders dated April 13 and July 13, 2026.
It stated that all deputy commissioners have been instructed to strictly enforce the demolition and removal of new as well as existing unauthorised structures located within the RoW of National Highways in accordance with the apex court's judgement.

It added that the enforcement process will be carried out as per the provisions of the Control of National Highways (Land and Traffic) Act and the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) issued on August 7, 2025.
The notification made it clear that no new commercial establishments, including dhabas and eateries, will be permitted within the National Highway RoW with immediate effect, as part of efforts to ensure road safety and maintain obstruction-free highways.
