Dimapur, Aug. 31 (EMN): Sazolie College, Jotsoma, held its 10th cultural day on August 31. The event was jointly organised by the cultural committee and students’ council of the college with an objective to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures of different tribes in Nagaland and also to create awareness among the students to preserve the rich cultural heritage.
The programme began with an invocation prayer by Limithing Thonger, president of Sazolie College Fellowship, while the welcome song was presented by Khriezhalie Theunuo, students of semester I.
Assistant professor Pelezotuo Ngukha, department of Education, spoke on “Our culture, our identity.” He began by narrating an Angami folktale about “Man, Tiger and Spirit.” He maintained that culture is like a stream flowing down accumulating twigs, leaves and minerals as it flows down. He spoke briefly on values such as generosity, hospitality, selflessness and respect for elders and maintained that those values defines the Naga culture passed down from generation to generation which has bonded Naga society over the years.
The highlight of the programme was the tribe-wise cultural presentation and competition.
The Chakhesang tribe presented a folk song and folk dance, while the Lotha tribe presented the story of Ranphan with a dance. The Ao tribe presented a warrior dance and two songs. The combined tribes consisting of Pochury, Nepali, Zeliang, Mao, Poumei, Kuki and Rongmei, sang a Nepali folk song. The Angamis presented Puliebabdze Dze.
The Eastern Naga tribes presented the story of the Ahom king and Watlong Anghya. Lastly, the Sumis presented the origin of the Sumi dance.
A display of modern attires of all the tribes was another highlight of the programme in which the Ao tribe won the first position, followed by the Angamis and the Eastern Naga tribes in the second and third position respectively.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Sanenienla Jamir, cultural secretary of Sazolie College Students’ Council.
