A humble appeal for collective action to safeguard the values, safety, and future of our Naga society
Respected Village Council leaders, Tribal Hoho leaders, Church leaders, NGOs, CSOs, women organisations, Youth bodies, student organisations, and fellow citizens of Nagaland,
I write this open appeal as a concerned citizen who deeply cares about the welfare, dignity, and future of our Naga society. With utmost respect, I wish to draw the attention of all responsible leaders, organisations, and citizens to the growing social challenges that are affecting our communities today.
The Naga people have always been known for their strong moral values, community spirit, mutual respect, and commitment to justice. Our ancestors built a society founded on honesty, discipline, accountability, and collective responsibility. These principles have guided our people through generations and remain the foundation of our identity.
However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the growing number of social problems affecting our society. Incidents of harassment, violence against women and girls, sexual abuse, drug addiction, drug trafficking, domestic violence, cyber-related crimes, exploitation of vulnerable individuals, and other anti-social activities continue to raise serious concerns among many citizens.
Of particular concern is the safety and dignity of women and girls. As a society, we cannot remain silent when many women and young girls face fear, insecurity, harassment, and exploitation. Every woman and girl deserves to live in an environment where she feels safe, respected, and protected.
I firmly believe that the responsibility of addressing these challenges does not belong to the government alone. It is a collective responsibility shared by village councils, tribal bodies, churches, civil society organisations, youth groups, women's organisations, student unions, families, and every responsible citizen.
Therefore, I respectfully appeal to all concerned stakeholders to unite and take meaningful steps to address these growing issues before they cause further harm to our society.
I humbly request the following:
1. : Village authorities, community leaders, and local organisations should strengthen community vigilance and take proactive measures to prevent activities that threaten the safety and well-being of citizens.
2. Take Firm Action Against Wrongdoers: Individuals involved in serious criminal, immoral, or anti-social activities should not be protected because of family connections, social standing, political influence, or tribal affiliations. Justice must be fair and equal for all.
3. Prioritise the Protection of Women and Children: Special attention should be given to ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of women, girls, and children in homes, schools, workplaces, churches, and public spaces.
4. Support Law Enforcement Efforts: Communities should cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting crimes and supporting efforts to ensure that offenders are held accountable according to the law.
5. Promote Moral and Social Awareness: Churches, schools, youth organisations, and community institutions should continue promoting values such as respect, responsibility, discipline, integrity, and peaceful coexistence.
6. Support Victims and Survivors: Victims of abuse, violence, harassment, and exploitation should be encouraged to seek help and should receive protection, support, and dignity without fear of social stigma.
7. Address the Growing Drug Menace: The increasing problem of drug abuse and trafficking is destroying many lives and families. Strong community action is needed to prevent its spread and to support those seeking rehabilitation and recovery.
8. Uphold Accountability and Transparency: All institutions and community bodies must act fairly, transparently, and responsibly when addressing social issues and administering justice.
9. Encourage Rehabilitation and Positive Change: While offenders must be held accountable for their actions, efforts should also be made to help individuals reform and reintegrate into society through counselling, guidance, and community support where appropriate.
A Personal Appeal
As a concerned citizen, I believe that the future of our society depends on the decisions we make today. Remaining silent in the face of wrongdoing only allows these problems to grow and affect future generations.
This appeal is not directed against any individual, tribe, organisation, or community. Rather, it is a sincere call for unity, responsibility, and collective action. Our shared goal should be to build a society where justice prevails, where women and children are safe, and where every citizen is treated with dignity and respect.
I respectfully urge all village councils, tribal hohos, churches, NGOs, CSOs, women's organisations, youth bodies, students’ organisations, and responsible citizens to work together in addressing these concerns and preserving the values that have long defined our Naga society.
Let us stand together to protect our women, guide our youth, strengthen our communities, and build a safer and better future for generations to come.
"The strength of a society is reflected in its ability to protect the vulnerable, uphold justice, and stand united against wrongdoing."
