Dimapur, July 9 (EMN): A plantation drive was conducted on Monday along the Tsiesema- Peducha bypass road by alumni of Shalom Bible Seminary at Sechü-Zubza in Kohima.
Updates from the organisers informed on Tuesday that a short program was held before the plantation drive. A statement, offering details about the plantation activity, was received here.
During the programme a leader of the group Shürhoneiu Sanchu, an assistant pastor, maintained that caring for God’s creation is also part of the mandate of every believer, the updates stated. He said it is up to each individual to do his bit for the environment, the statement explained.
Speaking about Sanchu’s desire to plant 10,000 trees, Ruokuovilie Kense, an associate pastor of Touphe Basa Baptist Church, expressed happiness at the plantation drive. He urged everyone to contribute to achieving the desired target of planting 10,000 trees, the updates stated quoting from the church leader’s speech.
“It won’t be a difficult target to reach if everyone can contribute in planting the trees,” Kense exhorted.
Mezhüvolie Khrabvü, a volunteer at the plantation was quoted as having ‘maintained’ that planting trees in this day and age was so much more important given the fact that the past couple of years have seen ‘so much more landslides.’
According to the statement, he said, “I believe we need more plantation drives in order to check landslides especially near the roads, which is a big concern and poses hazard to the safety of travellers and pedestrians alike.”
The volunteers planted more than two hundred trees along the by-pass road, the updates stated.
The saplings that were planted included wild apple, jackfruit, stink bean, cherry and pine, the organisers stated.
‘So far, the Plant A Tree: Grow A Life project has seen a total plantation of more than 3000 trees, the statement explained further.
“The various plantation drives since its inception in December 2015 has seen a number of volunteers from various churches, students, village youths, NGO’s and well wishers participating,” the statement explained.
