- DIMAPUR — Sangkumti
Village Students' Union (SVSU) celebrated its golden jubilee at the village
ground from January 3 to the 5th on the theme "A journey of resilience;
transcending towards brighter horizon."
- Member of Nagaland Legislative Assembly (MLA) and chairman
of Noklak District Planning and Development Board (DPDB), Benei M Lamthiu, was
the chief guest of the inaugural programme. Addressing the students, Lamthiu
congratulated the founding members and successive leaders in leading the union
thus far. He added that jubilee is a time to reminisce the past as well as
forgive one another to celebrate together, a DIPR report stated.
- Speaking on the theme, the MLA reminded of the struggles
underwent by the past leaders since its inception in 1975 and how they overcame
with the spirit of resilience to achieve the milestone. He however, bemoaned
that the village could produce only two officers.
- He encouraged the younger generations to open up their minds
and acquire good knowledge and skills as well as to work harder in order to
achieve success in life. He encouraged.
- Speaking on the importance of cultural preservation, the
jubilee cultural guest and EAC of Phukhungri, Joshua Tikhir, maintained that
preserving one's culture must begin from one’s own home. He said that parents
must first teach mother tongue to their children and not English.
- According to him, oral traditional practices, customs,
norms, dialect and historical places are the identity and the younger
generations must use modern technologies to document both tangible and
non-tangible culture as a way to preserve culture.
- The valedictory guest and president of Tikhir Students'
Union, Temong Y Tikhir, spoke on peace, love and unity among Tikhirs and
others. He also congratulated the union on the milestone achievement.
- Highlighting on the reservation policy in government sector,
he encouraged the students not to depend only on reservations but work harder
and excel through merit. He encouraged the students to discover explore their
interest and work hard to achieve success in life rather than hankering for
government job.
