DIMAPUR — State Agricultural Management and
Extension Training Institute (SAMETI), Medziphema, organised a six-day Skill
Training of Rural Youth (STRY) programme at its premises on “Value addition in
fruits and vegetables” from December 2 to the 7th, in association with the
National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad.
According to an update, during the inaugural programme,
deputy project director of SAMETI and STRY nodal officer, Tiajungla Longchar,
provided an overview of the STRY programme, while Dr. Watimongla Jamir,
director of SAMETI and principal of IETC, Medziphema, highlighted the
importance of eliminating post-harvest losses in fruits and vegetables through
value addition.
Jamir opined that, in addition, value addition could
generate significant entrepreneurial opportunities for unemployed youth.
The training programme covered topics on the preparation of
green chilli pickle in oil, ginger candy, carambola (star fruit) RTS, banana
chips, and the packaging, labelling, and storage of processed products.
The resource persons for the training programme were Dr.
Moasosang Longkumer, assistant horticulture specialist and post harvest
technology in-charge at the Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH),
Medziphema, and Tiajungla Longchar.
At the conclusion of the training programme, certificates
were awarded to the participants. A total of 20 individuals participated in the
training.
