An orientation course for animal health workers in Dimapur district was held on July 8 and the 9th at the AICR-pig farm. The event was organized by the SASRD of Medziphema.
Exhorting the gathering at the inaugural session, district in-charge of NEPED, Vizonyu Liezie, urged the trainees to review and recap the previous year’s training so that they can render better services to fellow farmers for economic uplift through piggery.
Head of Livestock Production Management of Nagaland University, Dr. N Savino, also gave a discourse. He pointed out the importance of developing confidence through the course to tackle problems in the field. Proper handling of animals, administration of medicines, wound dressings, de-worming and minor surgical operations were some of the topics that were discussed during the practical session.
Ear-tagging for livestock insurance, prevention and control of classical swine fever through vaccination, personal health and hygiene for animal health workers were the other topics covered by the resource persons Dr M Catherine Rutsa, Dr. Rüüsalie Nakhro, Dr. Atouzo Pienyu and Dr.Vihielie Sanchu.
Another official, project coordinator Dr. Vilatuo Rutsa, stated that Dimapur being the commercial hub of Nagaland, the state has easy access to all commodities. He encouraged the swine farmers to continue to produce healthy pigs. They have shown good performance when compared to other district villagers, he said.
Out of 6.9 lakhs pigs in Nagaland “we have only 220 veterinary doctors majority is doing pen and paper works and only few are in the field with 1200 plus villages of Nagaland, so NEPED-NRTT has framed out this program so that the trained animal health workers reached the farmers at their doorstep, Dr. Rutsa said. A pack of first aid medicines is given to each participant and a special gift to the best trainee.
