DIMAPUR — The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has recovered more than INR 2.45 crore in April through anti-smuggling, ticket checking and enforcement operations.
As many as 3081 cases were registered under various sections of the Railways Act and more than 3000 offenders prosecuted for unlawful activities across railway premises in April, reported NFR in an update. It added that 1074 ticketless travelers were detected during the ticket checking drives, resulting in recovery of fines exceeding INR 10 lakh.
The RPF also detected 33 narcotics smuggling cases involving ganja, brown sugar and cough syrup valued at over INR 2.35 crore, while 15 persons were arrested in connection with illicit liquor smuggling cases last month. Four touts were arrested during anti-touting operations, leading to seizure of 47 railway tickets worth over INR 1.43 lakh, and 32 persons involved in theft of railway property were apprehended with recovery of stolen railway materials valued at more than INR 2.10 lakh, said the update.

“As part of its ongoing efforts to ensure passenger safety and security, RPF/NFR apprehended 28 persons involved in theft of passenger belongings and recovered stolen items including 44 mobile phones worth over INR 6.19 lakh. The force also arrested three persons involved in stone pelting incidents on running trains and apprehended 16 illegal immigrants during the month,” read the press release.

“Additionally, 113 left-behind luggage items worth around INR 1.40 cr. were recovered and returned to passengers after proper verification. On an average, 53 trains were escorted daily by RPF personnel to ensure passenger security across the zone,” it added.
It went on to state that 80 minor boys and girls were rescued along with four women and safely handed them over to Childline, NGOs, parents and police authorities, while 1596 persons were prosecuted for littering railway premises.
