Imphal, June 5 (EMN): The Deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Joykumar Singh has inaugurated the ninth roof top solar power plant in the Uripok constituency in Imphal West district on June 5.
About 35 to 40 different places have been identified for installation in Uripok constituency out of which nine plants were installed and generating till date since last few weeks, said Joykumar.
“Seventy percent of the total cost meant for installation is borne by government while the remaining 30% has to be borne by the individual or the institution which have applied for the installation,” remarked Joykumar.
The deputy chief minister said that solar energy although, cheapest and abundantly available in our environment, it has to be used sensibly.
As an alternative to generate energy, grid connected roof top solar power plants have been installed at different places under a project, he added. The project was said to have been jointly taken up by the Manireda and Manipur state power distribution company limited in the state.
The director of Manireda, L Manglem Singh said 60-70 % of the total energy in the country have been generated from thermal power plants which causes a series of environmental threats. Therefore, to counter such challenges, people’s participation in spreading awareness on the importance of solar energy is necessary to sustain such projects. Although small, this project will definitely help to generate clean and environment friendly energy, he added.
