DIMAPUR — Commemorating the 94th martyr’s day anniversary of Haipou Jadonang, the Rongmei Phwam Guwahati (RPG) organised a colloquium titled "The significance of Haipou Jadonang's legacy in today's context" on August 29 at Rongkai, Iongkhuli.

An update from the organisation stated that the event drew participants from various backgrounds, who gathered to commemorate the enduring impact of one of the Naga's most revered leaders.

It described Haipou Jadonang as a prominent Rongmei Naga leader, spiritual figure and social and political reformer, who dedicated his life to liberating the Naga people from British colonial rule during the early 20th century. It stated that Haipou Jadonang led the movement for establishing Makamv Guanghdi , an independent Naga kingdom referred to as Naga Raj by the British Raj, which eventually led to his execution by hanging on August 29, 1931 in Imphal.

The colloquium began with a captivating performance of 'Huay Kauhmei' (a traditional chant expressed in a dynamic geometric pattern), which set the tone for a day filled with cultural pride and reflection.

It stated that participants enjoyed a lively display that included a Jadonang parade, a short film showcasing Jadonang's life and musical performance featuring the Zuk Neypui Lu (Jadonang’s song of prayer for the new age) and Rongmei Chapriak Lu (folk song).

The discussions centred on Jadonang's legacy and its relevance to contemporary society, promoting dialogue on the importance of upholding unity, cultural identity and social integration among the Rongmei people.

Key themes discussed included Jadonang's vision, encapsulated in the slogan 'Makamv Guangh Tu Pwni,' which emphasises cultural resurgence, unity and self-rule. It stated that the colloquium highlighted several pertinent issues concerning legal awareness, particularly regarding land and other natural resources.

The discussions and reflections emphasised the necessity for collective action among the Rongmei and underscored the significance of conducting comprehensive research on the traditional system of the Rongmei people. It added that such initiatives aim to promote a deeper understanding and protection of indigenous rights and practices.

It stated that the colloquium was both a day of remembrance and celebration of pride, reinforcing the commitment to preserving the rich Rongmei culture and the ideologies established by Haipou Jadonang.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by RPG secretary, Adam Gangmei.
