Madrid, November 8: Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo, who was judged Spanish football’s best player of 2015-16, was presented the Alfredo di Stefano Trophy by sports daily Marca.
Recognised alongside the Portuguese international was Argentine Diego Simeone, who on Monday picked up the Miguel Muñoz prize as outstanding coach for his accomplishments with Atletico Madrid, reports Efe.
Another South American, Uruguay international Luis Suarez, who was absent during the awards ceremony, was honoured with the Pichichi top scorer award for his 40 goals in the colours of FC Barcelona.
Ronaldo’s Real Madrid teammate Alvaro Morata was chosen as the best Spanish international of 2015-16.
Atleti’s Jan Oblak took the Zamora prize for fewest goals allowed while the Zarra -- for the Spaniard with the most goals scored in La Liga -- went to Aritz Aduriz of Athletic Bilbao.Jennifer Hermoso, who plays for Barcelona’s women squad, took the Pichichi for being the most prolific scorer in the women’s league.
Real Madrid history will be ‘before and after’ Ronaldo!
After extending Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract with Real Madrid until 2021, the club’s President Florentino Perez said there will be a “before and after” the iconic Portuguese player in the history of the Madrid football club.
Perez praised his biggest star, who will be 36 by the time the contract, signed on Monday, ends, reports Efe.
“You have become the successor of those mythical giants and you’re defining an era. There will be a before and after of Cristiano Ronaldo,” Perez said according to the club’s website.
“With Real Madrid you have conquered everything. After your success of last season with Real Madrid and the national team, it is only fair that you will soon have your fourth Ballon d’Or. You don’t get tired of winning and that is why Real Madrid want you to continue here forever,” he added.
“You are now the big icon of the club, the symbol of the best club in the history of football. You have become the successor of those mythical giants and you’re defining an era. There will be a before and after of Cristiano Ronaldo,” he explained.
