Diphu, June 19 (EMN): Two houses were completely damaged by a lone wild elephant on June 18 night at around 11 pm after intruding into the premises of the 2nd Assam Special Reserve Force (ASRF) Battalion at Karagoan in Karbi Anglong bordering Nagaland.
The damaged houses belonged to Dinesh Taye and Budu Hanse, employees of 2nd ASRF battalion.
Residents informed that the elephant has been regularly entering the premise of the 2nd ASRF battalion for more than a week and putting the life of the people at risk.
It was also reported that every year, the people of Karagaon and the inhabitants of 2nd Assam Special Reserve Force (ASRF) Battalion, located near the Nagaland border, have to bear the brunt of human-elephant conflict (HEC).
“This year too, the people of Karagaon are dealing with the grave threats from the elephant for more than a week. People have been deprived of sleep for over a week now,” a local youth named Moniram Teron informed Eastern Mirror.
The aggrieved youth and the people of Karagaon said that they had apprised the Ranger of Eastern Range at Sukhanjan and the Beat Officer at Khatkhati on the frequent human-elephant conflict. They also informed that the competent officers have expressed their inability due to lack of resources and manpower.
Teron has appealed to the Forest department to deploy more staff for patrolling before any tragedy strikes that would result in loss of lives.
