An activist of the armed underground group NSCN (IM) and two other persons have been arrested by police authorities on charges of robbery.
Authorities of Kohima police issued a press release on Wednesday, June 10, informing of the arrest. Police said the three accused were chased down after they tried to flee after extortion from commercial vehicles along national highway-2 in Chiephobozou of Kohima district.
On June 9, police personnel of Chiephobozou police station were alerted to reports about highway robberies being committed on commercial vehicles in three different locations i.e., Nerhema junction, Zhadima quarry and Nachama lake (Line hotel area) along national highway-2 by some unknown criminals.
The authorities said that police personnel rushed to the spot at around 10 PM but the accused had fled from the scene on two motorbikes. Accordingly the police personnel manning Chiephobozou check gate were alerted and after a ‘hot pursuit’ by the police, the accused were chased down from Chiephobozou check gate. The police have identified the accused as one self-styled “Leacy” Ketholetuo Angami, 36 years of the NSCN-IM. He is from the village of Tsiemekhuma, under Kohima district. The other two were identified as one Videsielie Kense, 26 years, of Touphema village and Asou Angami, 44 years, also from the village of Thouphema.
The police found on their persons Rs. 3650, 39 leaflets of extortion notes and two black Pulsar motorbikes, the police said.
