DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 19
Mariani based civil societies led by the local units of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), All Assam Tea Tribes’ Students Association (AATTSA) have been demanding for road improvement on the Mariani-Mokokchung sector since past one year to the Border Road Organisation (BRO).
The civil organisations had resorted to road blockades last year also to impress the higher authority for a prompt action but except assurances, the BRO did not carry out any works.
Seeing no respite, the civil societies have locked the offices of the BRO located at New Sonowal (Near Mariani) on February 18 and announced an indefinite road closure starting from the morning of February 20.
School going children and examinations, movement of essential services like Fire Brigade, medical services, press are exempted from the purview of the bandh.
Meanwhile, Co-ordinator of Border Peace Coordination Committee (Assam-Nagaland), Er. Temsu Wathi Ao has informed the road users to avoid travelling in the above mentioned route till an amicable solution is arrived at and bandh is lifted.
