Dimapur, July 8: Nagaland has recorded a significant increase in the number of road accidents, according to data released by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
The report on road accidents in India showed that Nagaland had witnessed 531 road accidents in 2017 as against 75 in 2016—a surge of 456 accidents.
Nagaland along with Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha were among the states to have recorded the highest number of accidents in 2017.
Among the north-eastern states, Assam reported the highest number with 7170 accidents while Mizoram had the lowest with 68. The data further showed that the total number of fatal road accidents in Nagaland was 35, the lowest among the north-eastern states. Assam accounted for the highest number with 2474 fatal accidents in 2017. Tamil Nadu recorded the highest percentage of reduction in road accidents with 37.3%, followed by Maharashtra and Gujarat with 25.6% and 17.65% respectively.
