Dimapur, May 12 : In September 2015, schools in India were directed by the Central Board of School Education to conduct a week’s training program in self-defense for girls at the beginning of each term. And after this, schools were also to dedicate 45 minutes every day (that is one class period), for physical activities and self-defense training.
The move came amid growing crimes against girls and women in India. The authorities hoped that the training would build self-confidence in school going girls and provide them the knowledge about various strategies to defend themselves in case of situations of violence and abuse.
Adding to that slant was the secondary education program Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA). The Nagaland RMSA unit conducted a week’s training in self-defense “for girls against molestation,” according to a very brief note from the RMSA this week. It was informed that the “training” was conducted for the girls of government high school of Lengrijan in Dimapur. The event started from May 3 and culminated on the 10th, the organizers said. Taekwondo coach Limatula Jamir imparted the training, it added.
