RML Cancer Foundation’s Phase 2 blood donation drive at NHAK Blood Bank in Kohima draws 33 voluntary donors, highlighting the need for regular blood donation.
DIMAPUR — The RML Cancer Foundation (RMLCF) conducted Phase 2 of its blood donation drive at the Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) Blood Bank on September 12.
According to an update, 33 voluntary donors participated in the drive, comprising nine A positive, seven B positive, 13 O positive and four AB positive donors.
The initiative was organised in response to the continuing need for readily available blood in hospitals.
Citing the Voluntary Blood Donors Association of Nagaland (VBDAN), the Department of Information & Public Relations (DIPR) reported that the state requires approximately 20,000 units of blood annually.

RMLCF stated that regular voluntary blood donation was essential, as reliance on donors only during emergencies could lead to delays when patients require urgent transfusions.
The foundation highlighted the importance of blood availability for cancer patients, noting that cancer and treatments such as chemotherapy can cause anaemia and reduce blood-cell or platelet counts. Consequently, some patients may require repeated red blood cell or platelet transfusions during treatment.
It stated that maintaining an adequate blood supply could help ensure timely and uninterrupted care for patients.
Through its annual blood donation drive, RMLCF aims to promote a stronger culture of regular voluntary blood donation, encouraging people to donate not only during emergencies involving acquaintances but also to help ensure that blood is available whenever patients need it.
