KOHIMA — Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Friday called on citizens to actively participate in Census 2027, saying accurate data is essential for fair representation and informed planning for the state's development.
In a post on X, Rio said Nagaland is joining the rest of the country in preparations for Census 2027 and stressed the importance of public cooperation in ensuring the exercise accurately reflects the state's population and progress.
Active public participation is essential to ensure accurate data, fair representation and informed planning for the State’s development, he stated, urging people to support the census process.
Rio also highlighted that Census 2027 will be the first census conducted using digital tools, which he said would enable faster data collection, improved accuracy and data quality, and quicker availability of results. He added that census data helps governments plan development initiatives, welfare schemes, public services and policy-making.

Providing details of the exercise, the chief minister said self-enumeration will be conducted from June 16 to June 30, 2026, while the house-to-house listing phase will take place from July 1 to July 30, 2026.
During the first phase, information relating to housing conditions, household amenities, assets and facilities available in households will be collected.
Rio informed that households can submit their census details through the self-enumeration portal, se.census.gov.in, for greater convenience and flexibility. Upon completion, a unique Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) will be generated. He said census enumerators will verify the details during field visits before final submission.
The chief minister further stated that the second phase, population enumeration, will be conducted in February 2027. Information to be collected during this phase will include population and family details, literacy and education, employment and workers, migration, fertility and other demographic particulars.
According to Rio, the data collected through the exercise is important for public administration, research and academic studies, and will assist in welfare and developmental programmes.
He also said that Census 2027 will include caste enumeration of household members.
