Dimapur, April 27: With the 29th National Road Safety Week ongoing across the country, Dimapur’s Traffic police have been hosting various safety-themed activities in the city as part of the week-long programme.
The National Road Safety Week this year is being observed with the theme “Sadak Suraksha Jeevan Raksha” (Hindi for ‘avoid accidents, save lives’). The event started on April 23 and will conclude on April 30.
On Friday, the city’s traffic establishment hosted a team of motorbike riders. The additional deputy commissioner of Dimapur, Sarah Jamir, flagged off the riders at the City Tower from where the riders rode toward the DC Court. From there the riders embarked on a ride around Circular Road after which they proceeded to Purana Bazaar to converge at the District Transport Officer’s office in Chumukedima.
The district transport officer of Dimapur Lovikali Yepthomi said that the ride was conducted in collaboration with Nagaland Motor Cycle Club.
According to Yepthomi, safety measures will be undertaken from time to time throughout this year although the road safety week is set to culminate on April 30. The reason she gave was that 2018 was a “road safety year.”
On April 25, the traffic police called on the National Cadet Corps of different schools in the district. The cadets were given the opportunity to regulate traffic. Besides, with the assistance of the traffic personnel, they checked illegally parked vehicles.
Publicity activities will go on till April 30. On the final day of the event, the traffic police will be distributing pamphlets stating information about road safety to the public.
Yepthomi added that key-chains too will be distributed to commuters on the final day of the event.
Also, Zunheboto District Transport office observed the National Road Safety Week, under the theme”Road Safety Life Safety,” on April 27.
Update from DPRO informed that Bharat Scouts and Guides Zunheboto assisted the Traffic police. During the activity the team cautioned bikers without helmets, drivers to put on seatbelts and also distributed pamphlets at traffic point junction Zunheboto. School students from Love Dale Higher Secondary School and Cornerstone School participated in the event.
