MOKOKCHUNG — A resort worker was killed in an accidental firing in Chuchuyimpang village under Mokokchung district on October 17.
The victim, identified as Longshang Konyak, was hit on the left chest by a stray bullet allegedly fired by the owner of the Metsuben Resort, which is approximately six km away from Mokokchung town.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=1]According to police, the worker, under the influence of alcohol, had an altercation with his nephew, a college student, and threatened him with a machete. It added that the resort owner, Moasangba Jamir, while attempting to intervene and warning the worker not to come near them with the machete, allegedly fired three blank shots with a .22 rifle from a distance.
But unfortunately, one of the stray bullets hit the victim, police informed. The incident occurred at around 4:30 pm, it was informed.
Police informed that Jamir called up the police immediately after the incident and surrendered himself. He is currently under police custody and the victim's relatives have also filed an FIR on Wednesday morning in this connection.
The deceased has been identified as Longshang from Longeching village under Aboi sub-division in Mon district.
An investigation is underway. The police have seized the rifles and recovered three empty shells. Police also disclosed that there were only three people including the owner, victim and his nephew at the resort at the time of the accident.
Police further informed that post mortem is being conducted by the medical department at the District Hospital.
President of Konyak Union Mokokchung (KUM), Woknyei, and the president of Eastern Nagaland People’s Union Mokokchung (ENPUM), Yangsemong Yimkhiung, stated they have had a meeting with the Chuchuyimpang village council after the incident and concluded that the funeral service would be held at Metsuben Resort after the post mortem. Later, the mortal remains would be taken to his native for the final rites.
