Imphal, July 12 (EMN): The state disaster response force (SDRF) and locals under the supervision of the Tamenglong district administration continued the search and rescue operations on the second day to recover the bodies of two missing children on Thursday.
Seven bodies out of nine victims were recovered on Wednesday following massive landslide that took place at three different places in Tamenglong town, about 150 km west of Imphal. However, bodies of two persons were yet to be recovered.
When contacted, deputy commissioner of Tamenglong, Ravinder Singh, confirmed that search and rescue operation continued since morning after the rains stopped. He informed that there was no report of any recovery of the bodies.
State governor, Dr. Najma Heptulla, in a condolence message on Thursday said, “I’m deeply shocked to learn about the death of 7 persons and 2 persons missing in an unprecedented devastating landslide caused by incessant heavy rainfall in Tamenglong district.”
She has prayed to the Almighty God to grant strength to the bereaved family members in their hours of grief.
State chief minister, N Biren, has assured ex-gratia of INR 5 lakh each to the deceased families and other relief for the affected families.
He also directed the district administration to open relief control room etc at the district headquarters.
Reports reaching here stated that more than a dozen houses were completely damaged, while around five others were partially affected during Wednesday’s disaster.
In another development, state tribal affairs & hills and fisheries minister, N Kayisü, visited Thonglang in Kangpokpi district which falls under his constituency Tadubi to take stock of the situation post the devastating landslide that occurred in the village last week.
