The Election Commission of India has ordered repoll in one out of 39 polling stations under Northern Angami-II Assembly constituency where bye-election was held yesterday.
The repoll will be held in polling station No. 16 at Rüsoma village from 7 am to 4 pm on October 18 (Saturday), official sources said.
Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Kohima, W Honje Konyak, had recommended repoll at Rüsoma polling station No. 16 under NA-II A/C, official sources said.
The RO took cognizance of the complaint filed by BJP against the presiding officer at Rüsoma polling station for allegedly allowing proxy voting in favour of NPF along with some old men and women, official sources said.
Rüsoma may boycott repoll
In a turn of event, the Rüsoma Village Council is likely to boycott the proposed on October 18 repoll for polling station No. 16 at Rüsoma village. Sources said the village council has expressed dismay over the manner in which the presiding officer had resorted to directing some of the villagers. The village council has also demanded that appropriate action should be initiated against the presiding officer deputed by ECI, sources said.
Rio grateful
Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio has expressed appreciation and gratitude to the civil societies, church organizations, NGOs, village councils and community leaders for their positive contributions towards conduct of free and fair election. In a release today, Rio said the bye-election to the 11 Northern Angami II Assembly constituency was held in a free and fair manner under a peaceful atmosphere with a total voting percentage of 87.53%.
Stating that the electorate exercised their franchise and re-strengthened democracy, he said all the voters and citizens of the constituency deserve to be lauded for their cooperation and firm belief in the democratic process. “Once again they have proven that the will of the people is supreme,” the MP stated.
He also congratulated the Election Commission of India, the State Election department, the administration, police and all the agencies that have contributed towards successful conduct of the election. Rio further extended appreciation to the contesting political parties which have participated in the election in the spirit of democracy by upholding the principles of free and fair election. “Most importantly the triumph of democracy has been made possible due to the efforts of the people and theb voters,” he noted.
NAYO lauds electorate
The Northern Angami Youth Organisaiton (NAYO) has expressed immense appreciation and admiration to all the electorate of 11th NA Assembly constituency for exercising their adult franchise in by-election in a peaceful environment yesterday.
“You have shown to all that, the battle of the ballot can be peaceful,” said NAYO president Peter Rutsa and general secretary Kekhrie Pfukha in a joint release issued here today.
Furthermore the organization also expressed gratitude to all the party workers of both NPF and BJP, village and community leaders of the Northern Angami area, the Churches, Forum for Free Elections, the Election Commission, poll observers, polling officers, district administration, law enforcement of both state and central, besides all those deputed for election duty for a job well done.
“Our collective vision towards a free and fair election in Nagaland is within sight and grasp,” they said, adding “Our Special appreciation goes out the contestants, Dr Neiphrezo Keditsu and Visasolie Lhoungu for ensuring that supporters and voters of either candidates did not Indulge in any confrontational behaviour or disruptive activities.”
NAYO also stated that both contestants are more than worthy to represent 11th Northern Angami A/C and it would be a great privilege for the people to be represented by either of the two leaders.
