DIMAPUR — The Rengma Students’ Union (RSU) has expressed condemnation and deep anguish over the alleged physical assault, harassment and extortion inflicted upon two bonafide members of the Rengma community from Phenda Village, Tseminyu district.
In a statement, the RSU stated that the victims, unemployed youth who sustain their livelihood through small-scale business by transporting and selling agricultural produce (Yongchak), were on their way to Imphal on the night of March 22.
It stated that in the early hours of March 23, between Keithelmanbi and Sapermeina under Kangpokpi district, Manipur, the duo was unlawfully intercepted by unidentified individuals.
The victims were forcibly taken to an undisclosed location, subjected to intimidation, illegal detention and physical assault, and were coerced to pay an exorbitant sum, the union alleged.
“Despite their repeated pleas and inability to meet such an unlawful demand, the perpetrators continued their harassment, physically assaulted them and ultimately robbed them of their belongings, including cash and a mobile phone.
“The RSU unequivocally condemns this cowardly and inhumane act. The union views this incident with utmost seriousness, as it not only endangers the safety and dignity of our members but also threatens the livelihood of many hardworking youths who depend on trade for survival,” it stated.
Demanding immediate identification and arrest of the culprits involved in the heinous act, the RSU also stated that a swift and impartial investigation by the concerned law enforcement authorities must be made to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“Further, we demand assurance of safety and security for all civilians, particularly traders and daily wage earners, plying along the said route.
“The RSU cautions that failure on the part of the authorities to take prompt and decisive action will compel the union to initiate necessary measures to safeguard the rights and security of our members,” the statement added.
The union stated that it stands in firm solidarity with the victims and reiterated its commitment to protect the dignity, safety and livelihood of the Rengma community at all times.
