Nagahood deserves renewed ecological intelligence: and this calls for a reorientation of our collective operating system
From ecological awareness to meaningful initiative and sustained progress
Nagahood is rooted in shared identity, history, traditions and constitutional rights. But belonging carries responsibility: what are we doing with this inheritance, and what will we leave for generations to come?
Belonging to a civilisation is one thing; demonstrating the capacity to sustain one is another. Nagahood deserves renewed ecological intelligence: understanding the relationships between people, land, water, resources and the natural systems that sustain us, and translating that understanding into policy, public thought and action.
This calls for a reorientation of our collective operating system: how we think, make decisions, organise communities and exercise authority. The evidence suggests that a capable and conscious society has yet to emerge consistently in our public life.
The tour reminded us that environmental consequences cross boundaries: what happens upstream affects communities downstream.
The Doyang reservoir receives plastic waste, logs and debris carried downstream from its wider catchment, including upstream areas around Kohima. This exposes weaknesses in catchment-wide waste management. Responsibility must begin at source through collection, segregation and responsible disposal, not be transferred downstream.
The drying up of Etsü Chukha, a water source for Wokha town, and its recovery in 2026 highlighted the vulnerability of local water systems. Protecting a source means protecting its catchment.
The rescue of a black softshell turtle at Old Akuk in 2016—a species then listed by the IUCN as Extinct in the Wild—revealed the ecological significance of these wetlands. Meanwhile, mining around Akuk and Mekokla has raised concerns about habitat pressure. The Amur Falcon’s migration connects our landscape to wider ecological systems.
These examples call for more than environmental awareness. Ecological intelligence means understanding how natural systems interact, how human activity alters them and how consequences travel across communities and generations.
Wokha’s valleys, forests and cultural heritage offer possibilities beyond extraction. Thoughtfully planned tourism can create livelihoods through enterprise and nature-based experiences, while preserving the landscape that attracts visitors. Conservation and economic opportunity need not conflict.
The same judgement must guide resource decisions. The Changpang oilfield operated from 1981 to 1994. Resource presence does not establish the viability of local processing or downstream industry. Proposals must be assessed for commercial feasibility, ecological footprint and long-term consequences. Equally important is the public return: the revenue accruing to the State, the benefits reaching local communities and the costs society may ultimately have to bear.
Sound judgement begins with diagnosis; strategy follows understanding. Development must account for water, biodiversity, land stability and dependent livelihoods. Poorly considered projects can leave lasting costs after their returns disappear. Resource extraction without ecological intelligence is not development; it is the liquidation of an inheritance.
A living society must learn and adapt. Divergent perspectives reveal blind spots; inherited assumptions can become boundaries. Acknowledging mistakes and changing direction are conditions of progress. How can we decide where to go if we have not understood where we stand?
Article 371A protects aspects of Naga identity, customary practices and the ownership and transfer of land and resources. Yet there is an irony in possessing these safeguards without the public awareness, civic responsibility and collective dynamism to give them meaningful expression.
Constitutional protection provides authority over our land and resources; ecological intelligence helps us exercise it wisely. Self-determination also requires an informed community capable of exercising its rights responsibly and holding institutions accountable.
We cannot claim self-determination over our land without accepting responsibility for its use. The test of constitutional protection lies in society’s capacity to give it life through informed choices and collective initiative.
Progress begins with an informed community, but we have some distance to travel. Education must develop judgement, curiosity and civic responsibility. Learning extends beyond classrooms. Awareness must become participation and sustained initiative.
Organisations and traditional institutions can help, but responsibility cannot rest with them alone. Informed, organised and persistent communities strengthen institutional responsiveness. Reliable data gives concerns substance; collective will gives them direction and creates pressure for action.
Our history and identity matter, but must not dominate our future. They belong in the journey, not at the steering wheel. Earlier generations sought advancement through education and employment. We must guide that progress towards a more capable and conscious society. Development must strengthen communities, create opportunity and protect the environment for future generations.
Nagahood is more than an inherited identity. It is demonstrated in how we understand society, participate in its affairs, care for our land and prepare for those who follow. We have inherited land, resources, institutions and an identity. Their worth depends on what we understand, create and preserve. Renewed Nagahood must be intellectually open, ecologically intelligent and civically engaged—in policy, public thought and practice.
A capable and conscious society is not an achievement we can presume. It is the standard by which we must judge ourselves. Our education, economic choices, institutions and community initiatives must be aligned with this ambition.
Nagahood must be measured by how intelligently we use what we have inherited, what we build and what we leave behind. Progress must be measured by how far it takes us towards becoming a capable and conscious society.
