Wokha hosts 22nd edition of Winter Cricket Challenge, one of the oldest running yearly cricket tournaments in the state

Wokha, Dec. 21 (EMN): Renegades won the opening match of the 22nd edition Winter Cricket Challenge by inflicting a nine-wicket defeat on Orchid Hill CC. The Renegades won the toss and chose to bowl.
They restricted Orchid Hill to 77 all out in 16.5 overs. Only Mhathung and Bikash, with individual scores of 22 and 12, managed to register double-digit figures. Zuchobemo struck the first sixer of the tournament. Sunil, Nayan and Himangshu collected three wickets each for the Renegades to end the first inning inside 17 overs.
The Renegades’ chase was powered by a quick-fire 39 off 26 balls from the opening batsman, Upender Rai. His knock was punctuated by six fours, and it won him the man-of-the-match award.
With Limatenzuk and Nchumbemo contributing scores of 13 and 17 runs respectively, the Renegades hunted down the target of 78 in just 7.5 overs. Mhathung claimed the lone wicket for Orchid Hill.
Before the match, a short opening programme was conducted with Dr. Manazir J Samoon, the Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of Sports Council Wokha, as chief guest.
The deputy commissioner while declaring the tournament open shared the importance of sports in dev elopement mental and physical health, and also to spread the message of love through true gamesmanship.
He encouraged the young players to bring laurels to the state through sports. He cited the case of the neighbouring state of Manipur whose excellence in sports is well documented. The DC shared that in order to reach ‘greater heights’ a player must be guided by passion and humility.
He also advised the players not to get carried away but play hard to compete. The DC congratulated the organisers, Senior Noble Klan (SNK) for ‘successfully promoting the game’ with a message of awareness through its theme: ‘Bowl out HIV/AIDS’.
