Reliance Industries to develop CBG project in Karbi Anglong

The Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and Reliance Industries Limited signed an MoU for the development of an Integrated Compressed Bio-Gas project within KAAC area.

  • DIPHU — A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) for the development of an Integrated Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) project within the KAAC area.

  • The ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries, including KAAC's Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang, MP Amarsing Tisso, MLAs Darsing Ronghang and Bidyasing Engleng, and senior officials. Reliance Industries Limited was represented by Vice Chairman Vamsee Krishna Jyothi and his team.

  • Prior to the signing of the MoU, KAAC Deputy Secretary Ibon Teron outlined the project's key guidelines. He mentioned that KAAC will provide 4,000 acres of land in exchange for annual revenue of INR 6.6 crore.

  • The MoU also mentioned that both KAAC and Reliance Industries Limited will have a 90-day window to withdraw from the agreement, if necessary.

  • Additionally, the MoU includes provisions to ensure development of the rural economy and generation of employment opportunities for the people of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong.

  • Further, cultivators can also grow Napier grass on their land, with Reliance offering a buy-back arrangement that promises around INR 30,000 per acre annually.

  • Vamsee Krishna Jyothi, Vice Chairman of RIL, in his address, affirmed the company’s commitment to promoting local employment and supporting farmers without disturbing the ecological balance of the area. He expressed confidence in the potential of the project to bring significant benefits to the region.

  • The chief advisor and officials of KAAC also held discussions on the cultivation of Napier grass, also known as elephant grass, as a sustainable feedstock for the bio-CNG plant. Owing to its rapid growth, high biomass yield, and suitability for anaerobic digestion, Napier grass is considered a promising resource for renewable energy production.

  • This landmark collaboration between KAAC and RIL is expected to drive economic growth, promote green energy, and create new livelihood opportunities for the people of Karbi Anglong, the KAAC authority viewed.
