As the monsoon season approaches, I am compelled to express
my deep concern regarding the safety on National Highway-29 linking
Dimapur-Kohima, which is critical road that has witnessed numerous casualties
in the past due to landslides and falling stones. The risks escalate
significantly during June and July, and the recent past has seen tragic
incidents, including the harrowing video of rock crushing cars on July 4, 2023,
which went viral.
Similar incident occurred in July 2024 too. Most recently,
on May 30, 2025, a fatal rockfall incident resulted in the death of a dumper
truck driver.
Given the recurring nature of these incidents, I would like
to inquire about the measures taken by the government and the National Highways
and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to improve road
conditions and prevent such accidents. Have there been any significant upgrades
or safety protocols implemented to mitigate the risks associated with
landslides and rockfalls?
As the monsoon season is imminent, I fear for the safety of
travellers using this road. Are the authorities adequately prepared to handle
the increased risks during this period? I urge the concerned authorities to
take immediate and effective measures to ensure the safety of commuters.
Through your esteemed publication, I request the government
and NHIDCL to provide a detailed account of the steps taken to address these
concerns and ensure the road's safety. The public has a right to know about the
measures in place to protect their lives.
